Welcome to Noonan Academy
Our Academy is dedicated to the formation of the whole child.
We are committed to excellence. We are ordinary people who, with God's help, will accomplish
the extraordinary. When parents and school work together to reinforce each other, everything is
possible.
The child is father of the man.
We seek truth, goodness, and beauty in all that we say and do.
Philosophy
Every child is a gift from God with an innate desire and capacity to acquire knowledge.
Learning, both academic and spiritual is pleasurable for children, if the proper methods are used.
The early years are the best years for intellectual, social, emotional, physical, and spiritual
development. The whole child must be well formed and well nourished with truth, goodness,
and beauty.
A brilliantly educated student without morals and values is a danger to self, family, and country.
A well-educated student who is virtuous and moral will promote truth and goodness wherever
he/she goes.
Goals
- To educate the whole child. To take each child and challenge them mentally, physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually to be the best that they can possibly be.
- To develop leadership in all students so they can be a voice for good in the world.
- To create a family atmosphere where parents and parental input is always welcome and respected.
- To provide academic excellence in a school community small enough so that a student is a name and not a number but large enough to provide a challenging curriculum.
- To provide children with heroes who are models of virtue.
- To develop in students the will power to say no to peers when necessary.
Objectives
- To educate, to guide, to form honorable intelligent future leaders for America.
- To nurture the goodness inherent in every child so that virtue will direct their behavior and determine their choices.
- To provide a classroom environment conducive to learning.
- To provide an academic program that is well balanced and so rich that children will find the intellectual nourishment he or she needs to reach their full potential.
Program and Curriculum
The Academy believes in the mastery of basic skills. Future academic success depends upon the foundation on basic skills established in elementary school.
The school day begins at 8:00 A.M. and ends at 3:30 P.M.
Reading, Phonics, and Math
Reading, phonics, and math are at the center of our pre-k through 3rd grade curriculum. By
kindergarten most of our children are already reading. The pre-k and kindergarten program was
written by Dr. Noonan in 1975 and used successfully to introduce children to the wonder of
reading ever since.
Phonics is a powerful tool in the reading arena. It is not a part of reading. It is given subject
matter status and taught separate from but incorporated into the reading class.
Math begins in pre-k and by kindergarten the children are already adding and subtracting. In
pre-k through 3rd grade, the children use a math lab approach where abstract concepts are made
concrete. Lots of hands on and repetition are used to guarantee mastery. In 6th grade pre-algebra
is introduced and 7th and 8th move into algebra.
English, grammar, vocabulary, and creative writing are very important in our curriculum as well.
The standard is high and the challenge is met.
Science / Social Studies --
Our longer school day enables us to give science and social studies the time and attention these
subjects deserve. We traditionally are one year ahead of grade level in these subjects.
Spiritual Formation --
The Academy has three tracks to choose from. A student must choose one of the three.
- Christian Living
- Catholic Doctrine
- Character Education
- The Bible
- Catechism of the Catholic
- Church
- The Book of Virtues
- Book of Virtues
- The Bible
- Character education curriculum authored by Dr. Noonan
The curriculum at the Academy also includes Spanish, music, art, spelling, handwriting, P.E.,
and computer science (4th and 5th grade.)
Homework
Homework is assigned for remediation, review, reinforcement, or enrichment of material
presented in class. Parental involvement is vital.
Achieving competence or mastery in a subject may require extra work on the part of the students,
parents, or teachers. Extra study or homework and exam retakes or student tutoring may be
required. Our goal is subject mastery and with team effort, we do achieve it.
Program / Student Evaluation
All students in K, 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th grades are required to take the (S.A.T.) Standard
Achievement Test. Our students have consistently performed significantly above the national
norms. Ask to see our test scores when you visit. We are happy to share our success story.
Students
Our students are as diverse as the population of the Unites States. The one common ground is
that they are well behaved and motivated to learn. Their families place a high priority on
education and work with the school to provide a quality educational program.
The Academy accepts students from pre-k (4 yrs old) through 8th grade. Class size is limited.
Uniforms
All students from pre-k through 8th grade are required to be in full dress uniform.
Conduct
Only students whose conduct contributes to a positive learning environment are accepted.
Registration
Transfer students who complete the interview process may be accepted at any time. Registration
for the new academic year opens on the first Friday of January each year.
Parents and Extra Curricular Activities
Parents
Our parents are very involved in their child's education. They help with field trips, class
projects, and parties. The parent / teacher organization provides parents with many opportunities
to volunteer in and around school.
Extra Curricular Activities
After school sports
All grade levels -- organized and supervised by parents
Scouting
Boys and girls -- all levels
Science Club, Math Club, Art, Creative Drama, Dance, Band, Chess Club, Crafts, and Tack are a
few of the after school activities that have been offered. The school clubs are automatically
scheduled if there is student interest and a parent volunteer to sponsor it. All clubs are held at the
Academy.
Academy Staff and Location
Our staff is exceptional. They are dedicated to the children and families of Noonan Elementary
Academy.
